FREMONT, Calif. (May 21, 2007) — Phihong USA, a global leader in Power-over-Ethernet solutions, has developed a low-cost, 8-port midspan that lowers the cost of implementing PoE, VoIP and single points of backup in small office/home office (SOHO) environments. To date, most implementations of PoE have been for enterprise installations, but fully compliant with the IEEE802.3af standard in detection, disconnect, and voltage control, the Gigabit-compatible 8-port midspan provides a cost-effective method for powering VoIP phone systems and multi-camera security systems.
“The cost of the 8-port midspan, which is 30 percent lower than other options on the market, is affordable because we design, manufacture and sell our own
products,” said Keith Hopwood, vice president of marketing for Phihong USA. “We’re leveraging our high volume, low cost production of networking power supplies to reduce the entry cost
for implementing PoE.”
The low-cost, 8-port PoE midspan is ideal for powering a variety of applications, including multi-camera security systems, VoIP applications in small offices, and access
points for large public places, such as an airport terminal or library. The 8-port midspan provides backup power to phones and security cameras in an entire office, using a single UPS. When the power
goes out, the phones still work. This guarantee of 100 percent up time is particularly beneficial to small offices where easy accessibility to customers is the key to growing the business.
In addition, as small offices grow, PoE makes physical expansion easier and more affordable. When businesses add staff, office space and office equipment, it can result in
costly appointments with electricians to add and move wall outlets as offices and personnel are reassigned or moved. With Phihong’s PoE solutions, phones can be easily moved and added since they
are working off existing data cables, saving a company time, hassle and money.
The 8-port midspan is not only lower in cost than competitive solutions, but it also allows full power on every port, eliminating the need for installers to check datasheets
and calculate how many devices to connect.
The 8-port midspan features both connection and diagnostic indicators, and can be stacked on a switch or rack-mounted. The low-cost midspan supports Cisco legacy IP
phones and access points with no additional dongles or wire swappers required.
The midspan measures 7.8 inches x 8.9 inches x 1.75 inches.
Pricing for the 8-port midspan is $195 each. The product is available from www.midspans.com. Samples are available for OEMs today.
